NA and EU LCS to change format for 2016 Summer Split
The North American and European LCS 2016 Summer Split will be played with best-of-three and best-of-two matches respectively, Riot Games announced Tuesday.
The 2016 Spring Split will continue to use the current best-of-one format, while Riot prepares for the increased hours the new format will bring.
"For many of us, Bo1s don’t feel as satisfying as a longer series - due to their short nature, there’s not as strong a feeling of victory when a team wins as there would be with a more extended series," Riot stated in a post on their website. "Teams currently don’t get a lot of practice in a competitive best-of series which may affect their ability to adapt mid-series in the LCS post-season and the knockout stages of MSI and Worlds. Beyond this, the Bo1 format means more time between games because more teams are transitioning to and from the stage - we’d generally like to decrease time between games in 2016.
"Moving towards Bo2 and Bo3 formats creates some immediate competitive value for players and teams."
However, Riot has decided to have different formats in North America and Europe. NA LCS teams will play best-of-three games, while European LCS teams will play in best-of-two's. However, Riot says they're ready to change that if necessary.
"Given the prevalence of Bo2 in many European sports leagues (specifically soccer…sorry, football), we decided to implement Bo2 format in a region where ties are both understood and accepted in sports culture. In NA, where there’s a regional sport tradition of avoiding ties, we chose to implement Bo3."
As for how this will work, EU LCS will still be played over two days a week, but NA will now play two best of three matches on Friday, in addition to four matches on the weekend, adding up to a maximum of 24 games a week. As the EU format will be best-of-twos, EU LCS fans will always have 20 games a week.
In EU, the first four matches on Thursday and Friday will be simultaneously streamed, with two sets on each stream. In NA, Saturday and Sunday will have two simultaneous streams with two matches per stream.
Games on the second stream will be played on seperate stages.
